Many of us are familiar with the concept of “bill shock” – that feeling we get when we glance at our cell phone bill and the number is waayyy higher than we expected. That unpleasant sensation may go the way of the Dodo, due to a deal struck between the FCC and major wireless carriers which aim to eliminate the institution of bill shock altogether.

Julius Genachowski and Steve Largent, the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and the head of wireless industry trade group CTIA, respectively, are expected to unveil the new plan at a press conference in Washington DC today. The announcement will delineate the new guidelines under which carriers will alert customers when they approach or surpass their monthly data limit.

CNET reported that the operators who agreed to the new restrictions include all the big guns, including AT&T, Verizon, T Mobile, and Sprint. The propensity for bill shock has increased in recent months, as all these companies, with the exception of Sprint, have eliminated their unlimited data plans. Instead, they now opt for monthly bills corresponding to the amount of data consumed. Even Sprint may soon take this route, as they recently acquired the rights to the iPhone, a notorious data guzzler.

The deal, which was originally resisted by telecom companies but was eventually agreed upon, will be offered for free. Customers will be able to opt out, however. It will affect both smartphone and tablet users.

The new edict will be offered in addition to data tracking tools already available from most wireless carriers.

Five billion people, or almost everyone in the world, now own a cell phone, the Christian Science Monitor reported. But the predominance of mobile broadband internet is actually growing much faster. A UN report recently found that mobile internet subscription surged to 872 million last year, an increase from 2009 of more than 300 million people.

In wealthier countries, almost half of all people sport phones with access to the internet, while in poor countries it is more like 1 in 20 people. Poor countries display the sharpest rise in mobile phone subscriptions. The UN report found that subscription to cell phone plans that allow web-surfing, email-checking, and other online services have risen at the rate of 160% over the last year.

The survey also found gaps in broadband capacity between nations renowned for their telecommunications capabilities – countries like South Korea, Sweden, and Iceland – and countries that lag in terms of speed, like African nations and the Arab world. The US ranked 17th overall and 20 in terms of access.

This is mainly due to penetration rates for mobile cellular subscriptions and households with computer and Internet, where the U.S. has lower figures compared to the countries ranked above the U.S.,” the Geneva-based ITU said.

It is astounding to imagine that virtually everyone on Earth owns a cell phone, especially as so much of the world still lives in abject poverty and lacks basic necessities like food and water. A 201UN report stated that India actually boasts more cell phones than it does toilets.
That’s progress for you.

Proud of their progress, Verizon Wireless has been enthusiastically planning rollouts and ad campaigns for its 4G LTE devices. One of Verizon’s phones has certainly taken a leading role in the 4G LTE cellphone race while another, soon to be released, is bound to be an even bigger hit with consumers especially Android lovers. The two Android 0/S powered phones are of course the HTC Thunderbolt and Motorola Droid Bionic, respectively.

The HTC Thunderbolt has been popular with those on Verizon’s network and users have been taking advantage of beneficial promotions such as free tethering. Verizon has however been teasing customers with ever changing release dates of the Droid Bionic. Although it was supposed to hit shelves back in the springtime, Motorola’s claims about necessary updates and fixes have pushed the final release date to the end of summer or beginning of fall. Hopefully Verizon takes advantage of the open market pre, iPhone 5 launch.

While both the Thunderbolt and Bionic offer eye opening features like huge screens and crisp display, they do differ in some ways. The Droid Bionic comes with a 4.5 inch screen (.2 inches larger than the Thunderbolt’s) and its resolution is 540 x 950 pixels as opposed to the Thunderbolt’s 480 x 800 pixels. The newer device is capable of storing double the data onboard without an extension and has upgraded flash support running thanks to Adobe Flash 10.2. While both functioning with huge batteries to support fantastic features, the Bionic has been majorly anticipated because unlike the Thunderbolt, it runs on a dual-core 1 GHz processor. These aspects combined with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system have many believing that the phone will outperform all others currently on the market.

Some Verizon users however may still stick to the HTC Thunderbolt because it is smaller, lighter, or simply because it is a reliable device. In time, some may just upgrade to the Bionic because of that crisp front camera or 1080p HD video capture. Consumers will have a heavy hand in controlling Verizon’s role in 4G LTE products this year and will decide upon the worth and utility of the new devices offered by their network. So while this may be an interpersonal battle between HTC and Motorola, a larger affect will be felt by Verizon Wireless and its competitors.

Maybe you really don’t like to carry a lot of stuff around and can’t bear to deal with too much with it comes to technology. This doesn’t mean you should lose to ability to connect. For those of us who need internet connectivity on devices such as laptops and tablets, a simple solution comes with owning an iPhone.

MiFi and WiFi routers can sometimes be frustrating for those who wish a middleman weren’t necessary. Lugging around a laptop and carrying a phone honestly seem to be as much as most can handle so why shouldn’t a way to connect exist between them.

AT&T’s WiFi hotspot tethering feature allows customers to use their iPhone’s 3G networks as an Internet source for other enabled devices. The tethering and data charge ($45) allows users to truly turn their phones into personal hotspots without the help of any other device. Once users turn the hotspot on, it can easily be accessed from say, a laptop by searching for the network and then entering a password.

For those who have data plans for MiFi devices, this may help cut the overall cost of connecting when things are added up. It all however depends on how much data one uses. The 4GB/tethering plan offered by AT&T is probably not the best for those who know they will max that limit since overage charges will no doubt be applied. For other users who know that 4GB is just the right amount, this plan might work out and end up costing less on a monthly basis.

Today’s on-the-go crowd is a fairly advanced, technologically adept set of people. These tech savvy travelers are almost always the proud owners of smartphones. What with the ability to condense so much into one little device, they’re the perfect machine for those who travel either casually or professionally. While they may make managing schedules, meetings, files, e-mails, and phone calls much easier, a lot can go wrong and even render a phone useless when cell phone signals fail to support internet connectivity. Finding free Wi-Fi isn’t all that easy either especially when coffee shops are out of sight.
Because of this, personal hotspots are becoming more and more popular especially amongst this group of mobile individuals. Novatel Wireless has been leading the way in creating compact wireless routers that serve as mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. The routers have been dubbed MiFis and can provide internet access for up to 5 devices and connect to cellular carriers.
Different devices are available today depending on the network being used by the individual. For example, the Novatel MiFi 2372 has been specifically designed for compatibility with HSPA Networks (AT&T in North America). While network compatibility is one major difference between devices on the market today, most of them offer the same kind of application. The Novatel MiFi 2200 for Verizon may not be compatible with AT&T users but just like the Novatel MiFi 2372, it is portable, compact, wireless, and can create a virtual office almost anywhere. Both devices are ideal for use in hotels and airports and can be shared with friends or associates enabling group work. Mobile hotspots are becoming superior to public Wi-Fi become of their privatization and strength along with their practical uses on business trips.

Hotspots have become truly ideal for those who have to be on the go but need to stay connected to their jobs and families. Frequent fliers have acknowledged the advantages of having a smartphone and furthermore a device that allows smartphones to be utilized at their full potential.

Did you know that the towers that provide you with cellular phone reception also provide you with wireless Internet? Well Novatel did, and used such knowledge to create mobile WiFi hotspot routers.

Did you know that the towers that provide you with cellular phone reception also provide you with wireless Internet? Well Novatel did, and used such knowledge to create mobile WiFi hotspot routers. These completely portable, pocket-sized routers interpret cellular signals and use them to create your own personal WiFi hotspot.

So long as you can receive cell phone reception and are on a mobile Internet price plan, these portable WiFi hotspots can beam out broadband signals to up to 5 other devices, allowing you to create your own mini Internet network. Whether you want to surf the net on your cell phone, laptop, camera, tablet, or anything else, all Internet devices, when within 30 feet of the MiFi router, are able to connect and experience luxuriously fast Internet speed.

The MiFi routers do not give you free Internet, however they will not add to the cost of your current mobile Internet price plan. The MiFi router utilizes the very same data that SIM cards in cell phones do. Therefore, you need to insert your phone’s SIM card in order for them to operate; just slip it in and you’re ready to connect. This also stops you from having to pay additional Internet fees. MiFi connects to the Internet in the same way a Smartphone would, only much, much quicker and with the ability to broadcast WiFi to other devices.

Different networks operate in different ways, and Novatel have taken this into full consideration by offering different routers for Smartphone’s with different providers. Networks requiring SIM cards, such as T-Mobile and AT&T are compatible with the MiFi 2352 and MiFi 2372 models. All you need to do is transfer your SIM into the router and you’re ready to go. For networks that do not require SIM cards, such as Sprint and Verizon, the Unlocked MiFi 2200 is available to accommodate this. A Verizon MiFi 2200 router is available exclusively to the Verizon network. These MIFI models use their own data plans instead of SIM card data.

These routers are particularly appropriate for those who travel often and spend time in places where fast Internet is not always readily available, such as on public transport and in airports and hotel rooms.

Further explanations, specifications and types of MiFi routers can be found on the Quantum Wireless website, along with live online assistance for any questions you may have.
